Margaret Reid, a horse racing fan from Austin, Texas, was the big winner on Kentucky Derby Day when she snagged nearly as much as the horse who won the big race. And she spent just $18 doing it. The lucky winner laid down her cash on a Pick 5 bet at a local racetrack in Selma, Texas. When the muddy slop had settled at Churchill Downs, Reid walked away with $1.2 million. Reid took 3/1 favorite Justified to capture the Kentucky Derby in the last race (not that hard given he was the favorite) but also picked the winners of the four previous races.

While winning that kind of money on such a small wager isn’t easy to do, Reid won the monster jackpot because she picked longshots at 10/1 and 40/1 at Churchill Downs. Add in two inches of rain in Louisville, which made it the wettest Derby in history. Reid, who said she studied the day’s program, was obviously thrilled with her payout. She told the media she planned on taking a vacation, paying off her daughter’s college education and then investing the rest of the cash.
