Last year’s middleweight title tilt between Kazakhstan’s Gennady ‘Triple G’ Golovkin and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez of Mexico produced plenty of fireworks and the Sept. 15 rematch in Las Vegas could even be better.
The bookmakers at bet365 — as of Sept. 12 — favor Golovkin to win the bout at 4/7 with Alvarez at 11/8. Both boxers are 15/8 to win by a decision with the champion 9/4 to win by stoppage and the challenger 8/1 to halt Golovkin.
The two will again clash at the T-Mobile Center when the 28-year-old Middleweight Champion Alvarez will be trying to wrest the WBC, IBO and WBA ‘Super’ Middleweight Titles from the 36-year-old Golovkin’s grip.
While last September’s action and drama were confined to the ring during their controversial 12-round draw, it’s been a lot different this time around with plenty of trash talking before the fight. Everything kicked off when Alvarez blamed tainted meat for a failed drug test and the scheduled May rematch was pushed back four months. Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 Kos) said he lost his respect for Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 Kos), and promised to punish him in the ring.
Fans might not be happy with another draw and the odds of that happening are 18/1. There are other ring-related markets to wager on for the fight including the 9.5-round over/under as well as round betting etc.
Both boxers are known for their power but their solid chins dominated the first fight. They enter the ring with a lot of bad blood flowing between them this time though and vow it won’t go the distance.
