The men’s US Open tennis final at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Sept. 12th features the top seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia taking on second-seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia. If the fourth and final major of the season is won by Djokovic it means he will capture a calendar Grand Slam and his record-setting 21st major men’s single title. On the other side of the coin, Medvedev is hoping to take his first Grand Slam crown.
The 34-year-old Djokovic beat number six seeded Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals by scores of 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3 before defeating fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev by scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6 and 6-2 in the semifinals. The 25-year-old Medvedev took care of Botic van de Zandschulp by scores of 6-3, 6-0, 4-6 and 7-5 in the quarterfinals and then downed number 12 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime by scores of 6-4, 7-5 and 6-2 in the final four.
The last time Medvedev and Djokovic squared off against each other on a hard court major final came back in February with Djokovic taking the Australian Open for the ninth time in his career. Djokovic won the match in straight sets and since then has won Wimbledon and the French Open this year. Medvedev on the other hand, didn’t get past the quarterfinals in either of those tournaments but will be playing in his second US Open Final in the past three years.
Djokovic and Medvedev have met eight times in the past, all since 2017, with Djokovic leading the series so far 5-3 However, Medvedev has won three of the last five encounters but Djokovic was victorious both times they met in a major tournament with wins at the 2019 and 2021 Australian Open.
During his current run at the US Open, Medvedev has been dominant and has lost just one set in his first six matches, which was the third set to unseeded Botic van de Zandschulp in the quarterfinals.
He has beaten two seeded opponents in number 12 Felix Auger-Aliassime as well as 24th-seeded Daniel Evans and hasn’t had to go to a tiebreaker as of yet.
Djokovic is aiming for his fourth US Open title and the first since 2018. He posted just one straight-sets win in his first six matches of the event and his semifinal against victory over Alexander Zverev had to go the distance before it was decided.
Djokovic will either make history on Sunday or Medvedev will finally win a Grand Slam title. There’s a lot on the line for each player. The current odds at bet365 have Djokovic as the favorite at -250 with Medvedev at +200.
